Decades ago, extensive cleaning was done to restore the Sistine Chapel's ceilings. When the restoration team began cleaning the world-famous frescoes, something happened.

The artwork became so massively bright and way more colorful than everyone had grown accustomed to. Intense, brilliant, powerful. Not the dark, dull, gloomy presence in the chapel for so long.

The cleaned portions appeared quite gaudy by comparison. One even stated that the cleaned version resembled “poster art” (1).

The before and after of the restoration was incredibly dramatic. (2)

A dilemma emerged.

Should they complete the restoration? Or should they cancel it so we could return to how everyone was used to seeing it? Stay the same or transform?

Can anyone relate to this? When we improve ourselves, and beautiful colors appear, does it terrify us? Maybe, you think, everyone has gotten so familiar with the previous version of us?
