Yes, that Tony Robbins.

I wasn’t your typical low-bottom drunk. I had a job, a car, and a place to live. I didn’t drink alone — unless I was on the phone (that’s not alone). I only drank beer. Light beer. I didn’t drink hard liquor and hide bottles.

I would try to quit for health and fitness reasons. But I couldn’t stick to it. A string of broken promises. Promises to myself. No one noticed any of it.

I had been out the night of my last drink. It was nothing new.

But something was different. I was tired. Tired of burning both ends. Tired of the consequences of drinking. I wanted shelter from what I now understand to be an addiction.

On October 23, 2007, I got sober.

The click didn’t happen in the typical places where people like me recover from alcoholism. It was while reading the first chapter of Tony Robbins’ book “Awaken the Giant Within”. Hey, sorry if you thought he sat me down.

It clicked while reading his book.

The words jumped off the page:

How to create lasting change: 1) Raise your standards. 2) Change your limiting beliefs. 3) Change your strategy. What actions can I take today that will shape my ultimate destiny?
